Open Air Burning & Burn Permits

Open-air burning and recreational burning in St. Clair Township is regulated by Bylaw #55 of 2017, which sets guidelines for when and how fires may be set outdoors. Residents must follow these rules to prevent the spread of fires and unnecessary emergency responses.

A permit is required outside of recreational building. The burning of brush is prohibited in urban areas and is only allowed in rural areas with an open-air burn permit.

Permits can be obtained  online through Community Connect, in person at 392 Lyndoch St in Corunna, or by calling 519-481-0111. Permits are valid for 4 days from the date of issuance.

Before burning, check current weather and environmental conditions to ensure it’s safe.

Smaller bonfires (61 cm x 61 cm / 2 feet x 2 feet) that meet bylaw requirements for recreational burning do not require a permit. Only clean, dry wood may be burned.

It’s important to note that failure to comply with the open-air burning bylaw could result in fees for emergency response services or potential charges. Residents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the specific provisions of the bylaw before engaging in any open-air burning activities.
