Stay Safe During Extreme Heat

Communications | June 29, 2026

St. Clair Township residents are reminded to protect themselves and others during extreme heat this week.

Environment Canada has issued an Extended Heat Warning for Lambton County, with a ‘long duration heat event’ expected to last through Friday, and possibly into the weekend.

Maximum temperatures of 30 to 32 degrees Celsius and humidex values of 37 to 42 are expected today. Heat and humidity will increase further beginning Tuesday with maximum temperatures of 31 to 36 degrees Celsius and humidex values of 40 to 45. Minimum temperatures of 21 to 25 degrees Celsius will provide little relief from the heat.

Reminders from Lambton Public Health:

Extended Heat Warnings are issued when a heat warning continues beyond two days. This is also when vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children, people with chronic illnesses, pregnant individuals, people who work outdoors, and individuals who are underhoused or experiencing homelessness and are without access to air conditioning, are most at risk. In high temperatures and humidity, your body may not be able to cool properly, which can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.

To protect yourself and those around you from heat related illnesses:

  • Drink plenty of cool fluids, especially water;
  • Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day;
  • Wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric;
  • Take a break by spending time in a cool place such as a community centre, shopping mall, or public library;
  • Regularly check in on neighbours, friends, and older family members.

St. Clair Fire reminds residents of the following during this heat warning:

  • Follow campfire safety rules by keeping fires small and never leaving them unattended.
  • Always have a means to extinguish the fire readily available, such as a hose or bucket of water.
  • Ensure your campfire is completely extinguished before leaving the area.
  • During hot, dry conditions, even a small spark can quickly ignite grass, brush, or other vegetation and spread rapidly.
  • Always check during heat warnings to ensure there are no outdoor fire restrictions or burn bans that may be in effect before having an open-air fire.
